Sunday at the dump

This Sunday we found ourselves with a free afternoon. It isn't a common thing around here so we decided to take advantage of the nice weather and go do something.

We were lucky enough that this free Sunday coincided with the opening weekend of the Trinity River Audubon Center. The Center is located just south of downtown in the Great Trinity Forest. It is actually located on what was once an illegal dumping site.

It is an amazing place to see and imagine that once it had been a true dump. There are trees and grasslands and ponds with tadpoles & damselflies. It is quite pretty. The education center is beautiful. (Well, it is in my opinion. I told DH I wanted to build a house like it someday and I think he cringed.)

I wish I had taken more pictures of the building. The front wing is covered in beautiful cypress siding. The administration wing is made green stained concrete (I think) with a green grass roof. Very cool building. Plus all the kids had fun with the activities they have inside the center.

There are several hiking paths. They are flat & short, maybe a 1/2 mile or so long. They are perfect for our family with the 5 yo & 2 yo. The boys made it on 2 treks then we headed back into the education center to play in the sand some more. DH & A went off on one more path by themselves.

They are planning on opening campgrounds and hopefully with access to the Trinity River, they will offer kayaking & canoeing. Our family is looking forward to visiting again soon.
