We're at the lake for the 4th. I stopped by the library on Friday to pick up some lake reading only to discover it was a "the City of Dallas is going broke" furlough day, the library was closed. I headed over to S#2's house to rummage her shelves and dig through Mom's stacks.
As I headed to the door with books, S#2 came out with one last book, The Hunger Games.
(Aside: I first read about this book on blog I found while looking for books to buy for A for Christmas, Educating Alice. I was sick of buying Geronimo Stilton & Box Car kid books for her. While they are good books, she blows through them in an hour. Thank heavens for google and blogs like Educating Alice. It is written by a 4th grade teacher with very thorough reviews of books. Her blog led me to the Battle of the (Kids') Books, another great resource for finding good books for preteens. The Hunger Games won the contest in 2009.)
When I first read about the book, I wasn't too sure about the premise. Kids have to join a battle, the Hunger Games, where it is a fight to the death. S#2 assured me that it was a great book. I started it yesterday at 7pm. I was exhausted because we got up the ridiculous hour of 3:30 am to drive to the lake. I pushed through until 10pm and finally had to go to sleep. I got back to the book at 8am and stayed in bed until I finished it. I'm so mad that I didn't ask S#2 if she had the second book so I could start reading it immediately. I'm going to buy my own copy of The Hunger Games and the second book, Catching Fire as soon as I get home. I'm counting down the days until the 3rd one comes out on my birthday August 24th. What a good present for me!

I love those books! I cannot wait for the third one either! I went to three libraries one night trying to find the second one the day after I finished the first one.
Here is another book blog you might like:

This girl has been in a couple of my classes and I think her blog has won or was nominated for an award. It's for teens and tweens, but you might find some interesting read to pass on to A in a couple of years.
After I read #2 I went online to check into #3. I had no idea that it wasn't out yet. I thought I was bringing up the rear in reading the series and couldn't believe I'd have to wait. And I'll be in Kazakhstan! Not thinking it'll be widely available. Hoping it comes out on Kindle at the same time.
Great blog, Mims. And her name is Sarah! I think I like her.
